Children, especially older infants and toddlers, bump their heads often. In most cases, the child can be monitored at home. If the bump resulted in swelling and bruising only, without any loss of consciousness, or a significant cut with bleeding, and the child resumes normal activity fairly quickly, home care is sufficient. If there is active bleeding or there was any loss of consciousness, your child needs to be seen at one of the local pediatric emergency rooms. If the child initially seems fine, but develops behavior changes, sudden onset of vomiting or excessive sleepiness he/she needs to be seen in the emergency room.
If your child has an injury to an arm or leg, and is not using that extremity, or complains of severe pain, your child needs to be seen in the emergency room. Additionally, both Campbell Clinic (visit www.campbellclinic.com for hours and locations) and OrthoMemphis (Visit www.orthomemphis.com or for hours and locations) have day and evening urgent care hours for emergent orthopedic evaluations.
In most cases, the on-call doctor will only be able to give recommendations as to whether your child needs to be seen immediately or if it can be addressed during regular business hours.
