You never know what you sign up for when you become a parent, but you definitely acquire a whole new range of emotions—pride, joy, love, exhaustion, or perhaps extreme anxiety! If you have come to experience the latter, well-child visits are one way of setting your mind at peace as far as your child’s health goes. At All Better Pediatrics, we are proud to offer well-child visits to help you know how to best take care of your child’s health!

How often should I schedule a well-child visit for my child?

That depends on how old your child is! The younger your child is, the faster they grow and develop. As a result, it is important for your child’s pediatrician to keep tabs on them with more frequency than usual when they are young. Once your child reaches the age of three years, the well-child visits can be reduced to once annually until they are 21. Until they turn three years of age, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends bringing your child in for a well-child visit at the following ages:

– Three to five days old
– One month old
– Two months old
– Four months old
– Six months old
– Nine months old
– 12 months old
– 15 months old
– 18 months old
– Two years old
– Two years and six months old (30 months)

Why should I bring my child in for well-child visits?

While bringing your child in for well-child visits might feel inconvenient at times or unnecessary if your child seems healthy, there are many benefits of doing so! Well-child visits can provide you with peace of mind concerning your child’s growth or development, an opportunity to raise any concerns you have to your child’s pediatrician, and more. If your pediatrician notices anything concerning about your child’s health, growth, or development, they can alert you to their concerns and advise you on what you should do as a parent so that you can take appropriate action for your child’s health. Finally, well-child visits are meant to support you as a parent, so that you and your child have a direct line to medical support, guidance, or attention whenever you need it.

What happens at a well-child visit?

The nature of a well-child visit will evolve and adjust as your child grows and develops! That said, some constants occur in well-child visits. Your child’s pediatrician will conduct a head-to-toe physical, check your child’s vital signs, assess their hearing and vision, and measure their height and weight. Your pediatrician will also want to know about your child’s eating habits, intellectual and social development, emotional well-being, sleeping habits, hygiene, and about their safety. With these latter concerns is where there will be the most change with the well-child visit, as some things will be more important or relevant at certain times than others. For the most streamlined and helpful experience for you, we recommend writing down any questions you have before the visit so that your child can get the most out of their well-child visit!
